University of Delaware Ecosystem Overview

The University of Delaware's entrepreneurial ecosystem is supported primarily by Horn Entrepreneurship, or Horn. Horn offers multiple academic and extracurricular programs for students to pursue their entrepreneurial passions. While the University's ecosystem is still developing, students may engage in the Greater Philadelphia ecosystem, which has significantly more opportunities. In order to succeed within this ecosystem, students will have to learn how to take initiative, find opportunities, and build valuable long-term connections with local leaders.

🏫 School Led Resources

Horn Entrepreneurship

Horn Entrepreneurship, also known as Horn, serves as the creative engine for entrepreneurship education and advancement at UD. If needed, you can contact Horn at hornprogram@udel.edu.

Undergraduate Entrepreneurship Programs:

  • Prepares students for an entrepreneurial career by offering coursework and practical experience that helps establish a foundation in entrepreneurship, and acquire the necessary tools in marketing, finance, and management.
  • Similar to the Entrepreneurship major, the minor offers foundational skills for entrepreneurship; however, doesn’t go as deep into the technicals of marketing, finance, and management as the Major option.
  • The minor in social entrepreneurship focuses on developing creative, sustainable solutions to societal and environmental problems – issues that are relevant to your major field of study. You’ll gain the knowledge, skills, connections, and resources needed to identify and understand problems, generate and validate sustainable solutions and launch social ventures, including community service projects, nonprofit initiatives, and mission-driven businesses.
  • Horn Entrepreneurship is partnered with all seven UD colleges to offer undergraduate students an array of relevant and accessible certificate offerings. Certificates are open to all students from any college; each requires 9-10 credits selected (mostly) from courses with no prerequisites.
  • The Delaware Innovation Fellows program (DIF) offers unique learning and enrichment opportunities to select students from ANY major who demonstrate passion, creativity and an entrepreneurial mindset.
  • Freshmen may apply in the spring semester to join DIF for their sophomore year. Email dif@udel.edu for more information.
  • The Siegfried Entrepreneurial Leadership Fellows program is a highly selective, unique experience designed to expand and deepen understanding of leadership and oneself as a leader, connect and learn with others, and inspire initiative for positive impact.
  • The Signature Internships are for ENTI majors only and primarily held in the summer. On occasion, Horn will offer part-time internships during the school year which are open to all qualified students.
  • Companies are recruited to participate, ensuring the work is “entrepreneurial” in nature. This ranges from small startups to a company of any size that needs assistance identifying and growing new customers, new products, new approaches, and so on. This allows students to put classroom learning to good use.

Graduate Entrepreneurship Programs:

  • Develop the entrepreneurial mindset, influence, skills, and understanding you need to bring new ideas to the marketplace. Through hands-on experience, you’ll be ready to launch a startup, innovate for an established company, or develop sustainable solutions to important social problems.
  • Entrepreneurial studies MBA concentration courses are offered in partnership with Horn Entrepreneurship. Students who choose this major are encouraged to participate in the many co-curricular and networking opportunities offered by Horn.
  • The graduate certificate program in entrepreneurship and innovation at the Alfred Lerner College of Business and Economics allows working professionals to develop the entrepreneurial mindset, influence, skills, and understanding needed to bring new ideas to the marketplace.

General Resources

Outside of Horn, UD has a few resources which can also benefit entrepreneurs.

Funding Resources:

  • First Step is an extra-curricular program during the Fall & Spring semester for students to do research and help to solve a “health-related problem.” Students select any “health-related problem” that inspires them (for example, childhood obesity, opioid addiction, etc). Students form interdisciplinary teams to research their selected health-related problem over the Fall semester.
  • In the Spring, teams work on developing a concept to help solve the problem. Each team will be eligible for three rounds of funding. All teams will be provided with funding for the Fall semester to complete their research. Teams that advance from the Fall Problem Pitch event will be provided funding for Spring semester concept generation. Final Awards are presented at the end of the Spring Semester for winning teams to fund their concepts.
  • Every semester, UD hosts a Pitch Party, where students from any major can pitch their ideas to an audience, get feedback, and potentially get funding. These are good opportunities to get outside of your comfort zone and to be more involved in the entrepreneurship ecosystem on-campus. Sign up for the Horn Newsletter at the bottom of this page to get notified about future Pitch Parties.
  • REEF@UD provides entrepreneurship training, mentorship and funding support to innovators who seek to create businesses, commercialize discoveries and develop new products that will solve environmental problems or improve sustainability.
  • The program's four-month training program emphasizes best practices and offers team-specific guidance to participants as they work to develop and refine their initial ideas. The program culminates with a pitch event wherein up to three projects/Fellows will be selected to receive a one-year stipend, prototyping funds, and continued mentorship support.
  • REEF@UD is open to all UD undergraduate seniors, graduate students, and postdocs who are interested in using their ingenuity to solve environmental problems. Undergraduate students who are selected as REEF@UD Fellows will be required to enroll in an eco-entrepreneurship practicum course during the spring semester.

🚀
While there are resources nearby for entrepreneurs in regards to venture capital funding, I believe that it should be known that Delaware only has one VC Fund. Also, as of July 2021, Pitchbook states that 98% of Delaware's VC funding comes from outside of Delaware, from only 15 states. To reiterate: 15 states (lowest number of outside funding sources in America) make up 98% of Delaware's VC funding (highest percentage of capital imported in America). So only 2% of Delaware's VC funding comes from Delaware itself, making it an extreme outlier. We must remember to hold our state government accountable if we want more funding resources in the ecosystem for entrepreneurs.
